Most modern TVs have smart functionality. So, most of the time you'll be sorted for iPlayer, ITV and other catchup apps. Popular TV and movie subscription services, like Netflix and even Spotify for music make a showing. But, with all of that smart stuff dealt with, what kind of TV user are you? Here's a quick guide to the typical types of user and what to look for in the best TV deals:
Gamers
If you're a gamer, you may want a 4K TV under £500 that has special game features, such as dedicated picture modes or low input lag. You may also prefer QLED or LED over OLED if you're worried about screen burn. Low input lag is the key feature here though, as without it you could be losing every online match due to the delay between pressing a button and that being actioned on the screen.
And that's second only to the refresh rate (more on that in our jargon buster below) but simply put, the higher the refresh rate the smoother the on-screen motion. Bear in mind though that if you're planning on gaming at high refresh rates and resolutions - such as 120Hz at 4K or 60Hz at 8K UHD - you'll need a TV with a HDMI 2.1 port and a cable to match.
Other gamer-friendly features include HDR for extra colours in the games that support it, and also dedicated game modes that can show frames per second and more.
TV and movie fans
If you're a movie fan, you may be more interested in OLED panels thanks to the near-infinite black levels and natural picture quality, not to mention surround sound such as Dolby Atmos. 4K UHD

HDR and UHD
