Arguably the most popular zoom range, this 24-70mm G Master is billed as the perfect mix of high resolution and beautiful bokeh. It gives you weather sealing, a 9-blade diaphragm for buttery bokeh and minimum focusing distance of 38cm. The build quality is exceptional, the central sharpness is of the highest quality at all zoom ranges and the edges perform very well, especially at the wider zoom ranges. A relatively recent release, this superzoom telephoto really rounds out the zoom range of the E mount… without spending over £10k. It comes with a variable f/5.6-6.3 aperture, dust and moisture resistance and extremely fast and precise AF that works beautifully with the Alpha focus tracking algorithms. It's impressively sharp for the budget, with the centre performing very well. The corners don't quite catch up, but it's still at the top of its class. It also works with the teleconverters to give you up to double the range.

Rounding out the holy trinity, this telephoto zoom is one of the most sought-after optics for Sony shooters. It gives you a fast fixed aperture, dust and moisture resistance and 11-blade circular aperture. It comes with optical stabilisation, focus limiting and outstanding optical clarity. It's not the cheapest or lightest, weighing 2230g, but if you're looking for a stunning 70-200mm on the system, this is where your search ends.

If you're looking for a bit extra on your catch-all optic, this is a great lens to consider. It comes with a fixed f/4 aperture, weather sealing and a Direct Drive SSM motor for fast and silent focusing. Aspherical elements keep distortion to a minimum and nano AR coating keeps optical imperfections at bay. The sharpness, while not quite at the levels of the G Master trinity, is very good throughout the range and more than enough to capture excellent shots.

Another belter in the zoom stakes, this superzoom is designed for APS-C bodies and gives you massive 10x optical zoom equating to 36-360mm. Despite not being in the top-flight G Master range, the sharpness on offer is very pleasing for a superzoom, though it's definitely higher at the wider end. That said, you get 3 stops of optical stabilisation and dust and moisture resistance. It's a great lens if you're sticking to a budget, or space is an issue.

A stunning wide angle lens with an ultra-fast f/1.4 aperture and razor-sharp optics, this is a brilliant choice for landscapes, astro and architecture. It comes with a rapid and near-silent DDSSM focusing motor, weather-sealed build and XA extreme aspherical elements. It's a premium lens at a premium price, though feels relatively compact at 445g. If you're looking for sharpness, this lens has it in buckets and delivers excellent results throughout.

The pinnacle of telephoto portrait lenses, this 135 is a bokeh machine. It makes separating your subject from your background a breeze and melts the out of focus areas into a beautiful bokeh-fuelled dream thanks to an 11-blade circular aperture. It's not small, weighing in at 950g, though does feature a top-class design and extremely sharp optics with zero imperfections, as well as 4 XD linear focus motors for rapid AF. If this fits into your budget, it should definitely fit into your kit bag.
