Why Nintendo fans are so excited about this Mario picture

On August 12, 2020, one of the hottest days of the year, both the Nintendo UK and Nintendo Europe Twitter accounts posted a picture of Mario. The moustachioed plumber is seen lounging on a beach, with a caption that reads “Stay cool, Mario!”. And then the internet went wild.

Well, at least the Nintendo loving side of the internet went wild. Why? Because it feeds nicely into the never-ending rumours surrounding a Super Mario Sunshine remaster for the Switch console.

The rumours are not all conjecture and mere hope on the part of overly zealous Mario fans. According to reports that came to light in March, courtesy of VGC, much of Mario’s back-catalogue is to be remastered ahead of the franchise’s 35th anniversary. Along with these original reports, Eurogamer has also written about the remasters, noting that Mario Galaxy and Mario Sunshine are amongst the games set to receive a polishing up ahead of a 2020 launch.

The original Super Mario Sunshine, which was released in 2002 for the GameCube, is considered by many fans to be one of the franchise’s greatest outings, alongside 1990’s Super Mario World, 1996’s Mario 64, and the current-generations Mario Odyssey.

While these leaks and reports have found their way to the internet via reputable channels, Nintendo’s characteristic silence on anything unannounced leaves fans picking at clues and, dare we say, grasping at straws. As many of the replies noted on the original posts by Nintendo UK and Europe, the company tends to post pictures like this yearly.

Conspiracies and clue hunting has not been as prolific with today’s post, which shows Mario running in an ice land.
