Ring Fit Adventure sees players travel around an island, completing a series of workout-based challenges. These challenges can focus on strength and cardio routines, with added stretch and yoga segments also available. The difficulty of challenges can be altered to suit various fitness levels, and custom routines are also available.

The game combines the Switch Joy-Con controllers with two new peripherals, the Ring-Con and the Leg Strap, to accurately track player movement. The Ring-Con is the real star for the show, as it adds genuine resistance training into the gameplay.

The success of Ring Fit Adventure wasn’t instantaneous. Released in October 2019, initial sales saw around 2.7-million units being sold globally by December 2019. But then the COVID-19 pandemic hit. With much of the world’s citizens confined to their houses throughout prolonged lockdowns (like we need reminding), the gamified home-workout format of Ring Fit Adventures found its audience.

Shortly into the pandemic, Nintendo’s stock of Ring Fit Adventure depleted, and availability plummeted the world over. Major UK retailers, such as Amazon, Argos, GAME and Currys PC World, would quickly sell out when restocking as demand continued to grow. This was a story shared by the Switch console, too. Thankfully stock levels of both the game and console have stabilised and Ring Fit Adventure is readily available.

Ring Fit Adventures is not the only game to have suffered incredible levels of demand. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, another Nintendo Switch title, was released in March 2020 and has sold 33.89-million units to date - a phenomenal number by any standard, and one that has the game ranking as the console’s second bestselling game.

A similar story of success can be seen throughout the gaming marketplace. In terms of software, established series such as Call Of Duty and Assassin’s Creed had a bumper year in 2020, as did single-player campaigns such as The Last Of Us: Part II, Ghost Of Tsushima and Final Fantasy VII: Remake. With hardware, Sony had the biggest console launch in US history with the PlayStation 5, with Microsoft also pulling impressive numbers with the Xbox Series X|S. The popularity of these consoles is still growing, and both are still plagued with stocking issues.
