According to figures from the International Data Corporation, shipments of Apple Macs grew by 36% year-over-year during the second quarter of 2020. The report, which was picked up by Cult of Mac, suggests that the sudden advent of working from home, lockdown, and home schooling has been fundamental to this increase in demand.
The Apple PC shipment figures include notebooks, workstations, and desktops. Tablets are not included in the count.
It isn’t just Apple that has seen a growth in sales in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic and lockdown measures. According to other figures released by the IDC, the global PC market has seen growth of 11.2% year over year in the same period. Regarding the sales seen in Europe, Middle East, and Africa, the report states the following:
“Traditional PC shipments exceeded already optimistic expectations, posting strong double-digit growth in 2Q20. As lockdowns entered full swing, recovery in the supply chain meant that the unprecedented pent up demand for mobile form factors, needed to facilitate working and studying from home, was able to be satisfied.”
IDC research manager Jitesh Ubrani tweeted a breakdown of individual brand growth over Q2. While Apple has the largest growth by far, HP and Acer also broke into double-figures – no doubt because of the two brands’ strong market presence and wide catalogue of budget and affordable laptops.
This quarter of growth follows a disappointing first quarter for the industry, which saw the lowest sales of PCs in a decade.
Apple has been showing strong sales numbers elsewhere. In May 2020, it was revealed that the Apple iPhone 11 has become the world’s most popular smartphone. Read our rundown of this year’s best smartphones to see how our experts think it fares.
