Sony will reveal games for the PlayStation 5 on Thursday, June 4, it has been confirmed. In a post on PlayStation Blog, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan announced that the event will provide “a first look at the games you’ll be playing after PlayStation 5 launches this holiday.”

The event will be streamed on Twitch and YouTube on June 4 at 9 pm BST. It will run for just over an hour.

This announcement follows last week’s leak that revealed all new PS4 games must run on the PS5 console.

Godfall

We already know that Godfall, a fantasy-based, hack’n’slash title, will be making its debut on Sony’s next-gen console. Expected iterations of the usual Sony exclusives are sure to arrive at some point, with God Of War and Horizon Zero Dawn almost certain to appear. We will have to wait and see whether these are announced at the June 4 event.

While no specifics have been mention, Ryan notes that studios “both larger and smaller, those newer and those more established, all have been hard at work developing games that will showcase the potential of the hardware.”

This may suggest that the gaming reveal will encompass both the triple-A style blockbusters we’ve come to expect, and some smaller, unique and indie titles.

There has been some speculation that we will see the PS5’s hardware, however the blog post doesn’t say anything to this effect. Given Ryan’s promise that this is just one update instalment of many, it’s clear that Sony are now emerging from their relative silence to ramp up anticipation ahead of the console reveal and holiday launch.

In a separate interview with gamesindustry.biz, Ryan confirmed that the PS5 launch is on schedule despite the shift in the landscape caused by the coronavirus pandemic:

“We, and our partners, seem to be coping really well. And so we are on track. We are going to launch this holiday and we're going to launch globally. We're really looking forward to it and it's going to be a blast.”
