The Sims game players will know that when it comes to this game, there's no way you're logging off after 20 minutes. Aside from being extremely addictive and incredibly entertaining, what we love about this simulator game is that it brings you a world of absurdity set in a society that imitates our current one.

It's an impossibly free and creative playground for adults; you can create as much drama as you like and all the ridiculous stories you can imagine. You are essentially, fully in control of everything that happens - you get to (virtually) play God.

Before you start playing it for the next 45,786 hours, take a look at our best The Sims games roundup; you might just find yourself trying a new game or a new expansion.

Whether you've just downloaded it, or you're an avid player and are unsure of which game you should download next, we've created a guide on the best The Sims games. We've divided our roundup into two sections, so it includes The best Sims games starter packs and the best The Sims games' expansion packs.

We've also included a section on the best The Sims merchandise, in case you're looking for a gift for someone or just want to treat yourself!

The best The Sims games

There's no doubt that this is the best The Sims game overall. One of the main reasons it is so popular amongst Sims' players is because it is extremely immersive as it boasts so many features and content! You can follow your Sims to work, there's a plethora of activities and things to do, different worlds to visit, and the expansions are also pretty spectacular. However, it should be noted that there are some technical issues and glitches, but all in all it's a fantastic game.

Sequels don't usually have the best reputation but this one certainly does. The gameplay is incredible, you can send all your Sims to university all once, run a business from home (a prediction, perhaps?), and have plenty of parties and fun interactions. It also brought a lot of content missing in the original The Sims, including goals, specific personality traits and even ageing features.

The Sims
Price: £20.90

Ah, the pioneer and iconic game that began it all. It may not boast all the newer features or improved graphics that the newer games do, however, it's a great game for nostalgia and will forever live in the simulator games hall of fame.

Comparable to the rest of The Sims games, this was by far one of the most unfavourable ones, but that's not to say it still isn't an excellent simulator game. The Sims 4 ended up disappointing a lot of its fans because it lacked some truly loved features, these included the custom skin colours, as well as ghosts and toddlers. Nonetheless, it still boasts superb graphics, progressive AI and has very little to no glitches or technical issues (at least, in our experience).

The best The Sims games expansions

The whole pets expansion pack in general is incredibly popular, but in our opinion, The Sims 3 Pets takes the cake. The farm and horse racing features were fun and new at the time, and they're still just as entertaining 10 years later.

The Sims 2: University
Price: £24.39

What we love about this expansion pack is that it brings a whole new level of content and interactions with other Sims. You'll get to pick your university courses, and accommodation, as well as attend and throw parties. Essentially, this offers you such extensive gameplay, that you'll find yourself not being able to put it down. Plus, this gives you a pretty big boost if your Sim chooses a career in the same area as their university course!

What's super awesome about this expansion pack is that it provides you with a full-blown tropical island, called Sulani with plenty of new imagery, features and activities. You can make your Sims go snorkelling, swimming, or introduce them to dolphins and even mermaids.

The best The Sims merchandise

If you're already a Sims expert and aren't interested in downloading a new game (or you already have it) why not expand your Sims fandom by purchasing some cheap but awesome The Sims merch? And if you're not interested in buying anything for yourself, these products would all make great gifts for anyone you know that loves The Sims.

What screams The Sims more than the iconic green diamond design, otherwise known as the Plumbob? Nothing, in reality, this pillowcase would make a great present for anyone in your life who loves the simulator game, or for yourself.

Colouring books are an excellent way of relaxing and are pretty therapeutic. If you're in the market for a new colouring book but want to make it more personal, why not purchase a The Sims colouring book.

Another excellent and awesome gift for any avid fan of The Sims. An added perk of this product is that it's great quality, can be used for both hot and cold drinks, and is dishwasher safe.
