  • Customer review: "One of the best Mario games ever made, I think personally since Super mario 3 for the old NES and the SNES. I collected this for the nintendo DS and it was just legend. But I prefer in N64 cartridge form because I personally find from growing up liking the N64 that all of the true joy in playing mario is on that. In my opinion, if you truly like the Mario games, buy an N64 console and this game cartridge with it, if only to play this awesome game."

  • Customer review: "I love the original edition of Crash Bandicoot for PS1. It looks so very retro, the disc has a really cool artwork of Crash Bandicoot and then the second disc is a demo disc that allows to try out what were new games at the time of the release. Speaking of the game, in this edition you can only use the D-PAD to control him whereas the Crash Bandicoot - Platinum (PS) you have the option to control either with, the D-PAD or the analogue stick. Personally the analogue stick feels more suitable because this is a 3D platformer after all."

Best Retro Video Games: Then vs Now: Buyer’s guide

Games first, how to play them second

First and foremost, make sure your favourite games are available for the system you own - or, in fact, any system. Although you’ll find plenty of older games on Good Old Games (www.gog.com), the Xbox store and on physical discs and cartridges, they’re not all available for the same system or from the same online store. It’s highly likely that many retro game fans need to own several consoles to be able to play their favourites. Thankfully, there are also lots of retro gaming titles for PCs and owners of brand-new cartridge-based systems like Evercade and the new Atari 2600. The best mini consoles also offer a fixed range of titles too.

And the best system for playing retro games is….

For us, the best retro video game system to own is the one that fires up our nostalgia. If it faithfully supports the games you grew up playing, you can’t go wrong. That said, if you want to buy a video game console just for retro titles you do have some exciting new options. Although you can buy mini versions of classic consoles like the Super Nintendo, Megadrive and PS1, these won’t let you add more games; so, you’re stuck with the selection that comes pre-installed.

But, if you want to run your own games - including being able to buy new cartridges of old games - you could go for an Evercade VS, or even the handheld version  - the Evercade EXP. There are hundreds of titles available including some of the classics in our list. The C64 (a faithful recreation of the Commodore 64) also allows you to faithfully load your own tape and cartridge files.

Only buy a remastered game if you loved the original

A remastered game, done well, preserves the gameplay and essentials like level design and overall look and feel - but with a fresh lick of digital paint. Often, the only difference between the original and a remaster is sharper menus and high-definition graphics, plus the occasional big fix. For that reason, we only recommend buying remastered games that you loved back in the day and can imagine playing through all over again.

For instance, the original Tomb Raider is a particularly lengthy puzzle platformer - while many will revel in revisiting the challenge with better graphics or sound, others may buy the remastered version only to realise it looks and sounds great, but they can’t be bothered. So, choose wisely before you buy a game that has remastered content but nothing new.

Best Retro Video Games: Then vs Now: FAQs

Where’s the best place to get retro video games?

The retro games scene has expanded in popularity in recent years thanks to the sheer quality of the titles and gameplay on offer. But, along with that comes piracy. Although a Google search is likely to result in some free download sites, we don’t recommend it. Why? Well, aside from the fact that not paying for games is illegal, it’s quite often fraught with risk. At worst, sometimes old games contain malicious software or bugs that make them unfinishable or unplayable. At best, you’ll need an unofficial emulator to play them on and they can suffer from performance issues.

Can I buy an original game on disc or cartridge and play it on a modern system?

This depends. If you’re thinking of buying a PlayStation 1, 2 or 3 disc to run on a PS5 the answer is no. You can play some PS1 titles on a PS5, but only via digital download. It’s a similar story with the Xbox - although there’s a list of backwards-compatible Xbox games available.

Cartridges are a bit of an oddity, as a small number of new consoles - like the Atari 2600 Plus - can actually take original carts. There are some consoles out there that can also accept SNES carts and more.

Getting old PC software to run properly on new hardware is a real specialism - and it’s why the Good Old Games website is both legal and successful, as it irons out the issues and makes enjoying retro PC games easy. Lots of Windows 95 or XP games have huge issues running on later versions of Windows, so our advice is to skip the pain and see if your game is on GoG.

Why do people play retro games?

This is a simple question with a surprisingly complex answer. Although sheer nostalgia is right up there at the top of the list, it’s not the whole story. After all, you can feel nostalgia for things that are actually not that much fun to revisit.

However, truly legendary retro games are the ones that nailed the gameplay, the controls, the in-game mechanics and the overall look and feel. What some people might see as clunky, pixelated graphics from the early age of handheld games consoles are now seen by many as part of their charm and highlight how great their characters, stories and gaming experience actually are. For us, retro games are a welcome antidote to many modern AAA titles that can plaster over mediocre gameplay and underdeveloped characters with slick graphics.
