Quite a few of the latest and greatest gaming consoles can run classic games from a few decades ago. But what do Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros, Asteroids, Duke Nukem 3D, Star Wars Jedi Knight II and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis have in common? They’re all retro titles from the 70s, 80s and 90s that you can play, right now, on brand-new retro handheld game consoles.

Finally, the technology of today has caught up with the retro games we all know and love. In a way, the tech itself has gone back to the future - revisiting the golden age of gaming, bringing back the fun and even making new hardware in the old style. We all have our personal favourites here at What’s The Best, but which retro handheld game systems can run your favourite retro titles?

But what makes a machine truly handheld? While some of the best retro handheld gaming systems are indeed playable in hand, some of those styled after arcade cabinets are really mini tabletop machines. You can probably successfully hold and play many of these, but we think that the mark of a true handheld console is that it’s light and well-proportioned for proper handheld sessions.

If you are on the lookout for something a little larger, then the best retro games consoles might be for you. And that’s especially true if you’re hankering for a controller and of course a larger screen. As for the rest of us who like to keep things portable, the best retro handheld game consoles are right in the palm of your hand - next.

Blaze Entertainment has created a brand-new cartridge-based handheld console that runs a rapidly growing library of classic retro games. Just look at the list of supported systems: Atari 2600 and 7800, Atari Lynx, Intellivision, NES and SNES, Sega Mega Drive and the PlayStation. Plus, the Commodore 64 and Amiga for computer gaming. There are even games you played in arcade cabinets back in the day. You'll find classics like 1942, Commando, Street Fighter II, Strider, and Mega Man and more.

The Evercade EXP is a sizable easy-to-hold console with a generous 4.3-inch 800x480 pixel screen. The display is bang up to date too - as it's an IPS panel. So, you'll be gaming with great viewing angles, plus bright and vibrant colours. The Evercade EXP even takes a leaf out of the Nintendo Switch's book - it will plug into your TV via HDMI for a big-screen handheld experience. It's a brilliant system for retro gamers.

“The console also features a screen rotate mode ‘TATE’ for those games originally played on vertical arcade screens, a novel, yet fun feature. If you are pondering whether or not to upgrade your Evercade handheld, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed with the EXP.”

If it's budget retro-fun you want, this is it. Everyone remembers Pac-Man - the pill-munching ghost-chasing maze game that took over the world. Here it is with an interesting case design that evokes the original arcade cabinet. Yes, you do only get one game - but as a low-cost yet faithfully retro gamer gift, this is hard to beat.

We particularly like the size and spacing of the controls - meaning this can be enjoyed by adults and kids without getting cramped thumbs. The screen is a good size too, and the three AAA batteries should last a while thanks to the simplicity of the console on the inside. Colourful, addictive retro goodness in a small(ish) package.

Pros

  • A licensed authentic rendition of the original Pac-Man
  • Colourful well-proportioned handheld with a fun arcade cabinet design
  • Good-sized well-spaced controls mean it's playable for children and adults

Cons

  • Only one game on offer here - so it's for Pac-Man fans only

Best retro handheld game consoles for Nintendo fans

As a follow-up to the super-popular Nintendo Switch, here's the slightly cheaper and trimmed-down Switch Lite. What you get here is a slightly smaller (but still 1280x720) LCD screen (5.5 inches compared to 6.2), and no detachable Joy-Con controllers. It does, though, have a more traditional D-pad over the four buttons of other Switch models - which will appeal to any retro console fan. Also, while the standard Switch can be connected to a TV for big-screen play, the Lite can only be used handheld.

But what about that retro-gaming goodness you've been looking for? Well, this model also happens to come with a 12-month pass to Switch Online - and that means multiplayer for most users, but for us retro-heads it means access to classic retro games. You'll find titles that used to run on NES, SNES and Game Boy. There's probably no better way to play classic Nintendo titles - and of course, it's a slightly more affordable way of playing modern Switch games too.

Pros

  • Probably the most robust and well-engineered handheld on the market
  • Comes with a 12-month subscription to Switch Online for access to classic NES, SNES and Game Boy titles
  • Official Nintendo hardware means playing retro Nintendo games on it will be trouble-free and accurate
  • The 'proper' D-pad is not on other models of Switch, making this retro-game-friendly
  • A larger screen than most handheld consoles out there, so easier on the eye

Cons

  • Joy-Cons aren't detachable (but you won't need that for retro titles anyway)
  • Won't dock with a TV like its more expensive predecessor
  • Somewhat limited retro game selection compared to other emulation-based options
  • Game selection:
    5.0
  • Build quality:
    4.5
  • Console design:
    4.5
  • Value for money:
    4.0
Included games:None
Dimensions:2.54 x 2.54 x 2.54 cm
Add your own games:Yes - download or buy on physical cards
Additional features:Supports all Nintendo Switch software that can be played in handheld mode, play online or local wireless multiplayer, comes in five colours, Parental Controls
  • Customer review: “Great gift great gadget. Downloaded a selection of SNES games for free and relived my youth in the original SNES Mario Kart."

My Arcade has been around for a while now, carving out a reputation for chunky, solid and tactile retro handhelds. It does produce larger arcade-cabinet style games too - often based on a theme or single game. This one is our favourite - with a case emblazoned with suitably retro stripes and the Atari logo. Inside, you can play 75 Atari 2600 games. That's phenomenal value and even more fun.

Fancy some old-school Asteroids? How about Missile Command, Pong, Breakout, or Yar's Revenge? This thing is fully loaded with licenced games for Atari's 50th anniversary, but it's also very well-designed and built. The 2.75” full-colour screen is easily large and bright enough for Atari titles too. Excellent retro gaming at an impressive price.

Pros

  • Nice and chunky to hold for longer sessions with well-placed buttons
  • 75 licenced Atari games mean it's one of the best retro handheld consoles here for game value

Best retro handheld game consoles for arcade gamers

Don't be fooled by the brand name - Hyper Mega Tech may sound like a schoolboy's idea of a great console brand, but it's been around for a while now, licencing some truly classic retro games. The hardware is up to the job, too. Inside there's a rechargeable battery, and a 2.8” IPS screen running at 320×240 - perfect for those games you used to see on a 4:3 ratio CRT TV back in the day.

Although there are other themed versions, this one is a Capcom one - with 12 utterly classic and well-curated games from the legendary game publisher. So, you can expect to re-live 1942, Final Fight, Ghouls N' Ghosts, Street Fighter II and more. Even better, if you loved them in the arcade back in the 80s, these are the arcade versions. Lastly, but perhaps the killer feature of the Super Pocket is that it can take Evercade carts. That means that, when you're all Capcommed-out, you can plug over 500 retro titles into this thanks to full Evercade compatibility. Wow.

Pros

  • Compatible with Evercade cartridges, so this gives you much more than just 12 Capcom games
  • IPS screen for great colour and brightness
  • An excellent selection of classic Capcom games - so even without any carts to slot into it, you won't be bored
  • The headphone socket makes this ideal for taking with you on public transport

Cons

  • Given the size of the screen, you'll need good eyesight for some games that have very small text
  • Game selection:
    4.5
  • Build quality:
    4.5
  • Console design:
    4.0
  • Value for money:
    4.5

Dimensions:78mm x 125mm x 25mm
Add your own games:Yes - via Evercade cartridges (Evercade has 45 cartridges with 500+ games)
Additional features:2.8” IPS Screen 320×240, USB-C fast charging
  • Customer review: “Excellent build quality and battery life, with a great selection of games. Evercade cartridge compatibility makes this brilliant value."

Best retro handheld game consoles for nostalgia

Nintendo Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda - - one of the best retro handheld game consoles
Price: $46.99 (was £49.99)

www.hit.co.uk

Any retro gamer will probably remember the original Nintendo Game & Watch. The little early 80s LCD handheld was the perfect size for sneaking into school. If anyone asked you why you have it on the desk, you could simply say it was because it was the only watch you have (and no, that excuse never worked.) But now, the Game & Watch is back - right down to the brushed metal facia and packaging art. Now it's sporting a full-colour screen, accurately reproducing those beeps and boops from the internal speaker.

Although there's a Super Mario Bros. version, this one contains three classic games in the Legend of Zelda series – The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. And, if you're longing for that classic LCD gaming buzz, it includes a special version of Game & Watch classic Vermin starring Link as a playable character. They've even made the timer and clock functions a little playable. Retro nostalgia at its best.

Pros

  • Looks just like the original LCD games for a top-tier retro nostalgia-kick
  • A bright colour screen is a welcome upgrade
  • Three entire Zelda games, plus an LCD-style game and playable timer and clock all in one
  • Pocket-sized and also looks good on display when you're not out and about

Cons

  • You can't add other games
  • Game selection:
    4.0
  • Build quality:
    5.0
  • Console design:
    5.0
  • Value for money:
    4.0
Included games:The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, and a playable clock and timer
Dimensions:18.6 x 12.6 x 3.4 cm
Add your own games:No
Additional features:Digital clock with 35 different animations
  • Customer review: “Amazing device, it's like pure nostalgia In in small package, I have really loved getting into these Zelda games again, and the original form factor is so nostalgic in itself! Don't delay, and buy one or 2 before they're all gone! I hope they will become collector's pieces in years to come!”

Best retro handheld game consoles of 2023: Buyer’s Guide

Choose your handheld console based on the games you like best

Just because you like a certain retro Nintendo game doesn’t necessarily mean it’s available on the Switch. Similarly, buying an Evercade EXP means you’re limited to game titles that make it onto their officially released cartridges. So, if you’re a mega-fan of one game or game franchise, do your research first. The good news is that the game library supported by both Evercade and Valve’s Steam Deck is growing all the time.

Not into the retro gaming scene? Well, some of the latest and best handheld consoles are capable of running the latest AAA titles. Steam Deck users get spoiled for choice when it comes to the latest games; And, of course, the Nintendo Switch is probably the most successful handheld console right now.

Pay careful attention to the hardware

You only have to type ‘retro game console’ into Google and you fall into a bottomless pit of handhelds that leave much to be desired. We’ve carefully selected the best retro handheld consoles here; But, if you decide to go for something different check and triple-check user reviews.

The market for handheld gaming machines is rife with unbranded cheap plastic tat preloaded with unlicensed or unheard-of ‘retro games’. Only one of our popular choices, the Steam Deck, officially supports ways of adding and running your own games. Many of the cheap and nasty handhelds out there will boast compatibility with various emulators. They claim to run every game ROM and disc image. If you own licenced versions of retro games and want to explore this option, it’s entirely possible to do that. Just be aware that there aren’t many established brands that support it.

Definitely accessorise

Unless the best retro handheld for you comes with a rechargeable battery, you’re going to run out of juice fast. So, don’t forget to grab some high-quality rechargeable batteries and a charger to go with them.

Lastly, but certainly no afterthought, you’ll need a protective case. The great thing about all handheld game machines is their portability. Don’t trust its safety to your pocket just because it’s pocket-sized. There’s a huge range of cases for handheld game consoles out there. Many have plenty of room for extras like cartridges and cables.

Best retro handheld game consoles of 2023: FAQs

Are retro handhelds legal?

It depends. Some come loaded with unlicensed pirated games and are poorly built; others are clones of official game consoles inside and out. Those are clearly illegal and we don’t recommend buying any of them. Apart from questionable legalities, unbranded or no-brand devices like these will almost always have flimsy controls. Not to mention poor screens, bad emulation and batteries that we wouldn’t leave unattended.

Our picks above, though, are totally the opposite. They feature officially licenced games. And the hardware is tried, tested and loved by retro gamers the world over.

What’s the best retro handheld that can play PS2?

We recommend the Valve Steam Deck - but you’ll need software like EmuDeck to achieve this. More on that below.

What handheld is best for emulation?

The Steam Deck is by far the best option here. As mentioned above, Emulation itself is well supported and running it is not illegal. Using software like EmuDeck (also mentioned above) you can download a range of emulators. It's a great way to play copies of your legally owned games.  At the moment, this includes systems like Atari, Mega Drive, Super Nintendo, PlayStation, N64 and more.
