It can be easy to look at the world of video game consoles and see nothing but grey futures, terrifying zombies, and bloody battlefields. But luckily, the gaming world is broad, inclusive and full of titles to please everyone. Below, the gaming experts at What's the Best have rounded up some of their favourite video games into a list of the best Switch games for kids. This list will highlight to parents the best games that young uns can enjoy while giving them peace of mind that they are playing something child-friendly and age-appropriate.

Much like all gaming consoles, the list of the best Nintendo Switch games is long and diverse, catering to all tastes in the gaming community. But of the three leading console manufacturers (the others being Sony and Microsoft), Nintendo has a child-friendly advantage.

The Japanese gaming giant’s hallmark is bold, bright, colourful and family-friendly. Look at the Nintendo mascot, Super Mario, and you’ll see what we mean. The chunky-cheeky plumber is about as far from the violent and bleak landscapes seen on PlayStation and Xbox as you can get.

It isn’t just Mario that makes the Switch the ideal console for kids. There are tonnes of titles out there that are kid-friendly. There are games from LEGO full of charm and adventure, new 3D outings for the cute and pink Kirby, and Marvel superhero games all waiting to keep the kids happy. Minecraft and Fortnite are also available on the system, and no one needs to be told how well these games go down with kids. There’s so much choice that you’ll need help cutting through to what’s good.

With that in mind, we’ve enlisted our gaming experts to assemble a buyer’s guide listing the best Switch games for kids. We’ve even included the average playtime of real reviewers so you can see just how long these games will keep the kids occupied. Note that these times include those of adults and experienced gamers - new gamers will likely take longer.

Switch multiplayer modes explained

If a Switch game is multiplayer, more than one person can play it simultaneously. There are three ways in which multiplayer can be facilitated on Switch. Here are the Switch multiplayer modes explained:

Single system: A local form of multiplayer where players can use the same Switch console to play a game together. All that is required is enough controllers for each to play. Single system multiplayer can support up to eight players.

Local wireless: A local form of multiplayer where players connect multiple Switch consoles together through a wireless connection to play a game together. This method can support up to eight players, each with their console.

Online: This multiplayer mode has consoles connected to servers over the internet to play games with players worldwide. Depending on the game type, you can play online multiplayer games with friends or strangers. To use online multiplayer on the Switch, you must pay for an online subscription, which costs £19.99 for one year.

It's important to note that not all games support all three modes, so it's always best to check the game's specific features before purchasing. In our write-up, we have included the modes available for each game.

The best Mario game for kids

Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Rrp: $59.99

Price: $45.49

Walmart$46.50View offer

We love Super Mario Bros. Wonder as it’s a fun and exciting take on the classic 2D platformer Mario tradition and adds in gallons of fresh ideas and eccentric mechanics, making it a game like no other. Each level has a collectable called a Wonder Flower, which can transform the level with a unique mechanic, from transforming Mario into a ball of sticky slime to making the level into a musical where Mario is powered up by jumping on the beat. It is great for kids and adults alike, so parents will enjoy playing multiplayer with their children.

For added accessibility, the game has an option where you can play as a character who cannot be damaged and knocked out of the game, which is ideal for inexperienced gamers who want to see all the game can offer without getting endless Game Over screens.

These Pokémon games are modern remakes of the classic 1998 Game Boy game, Pokémon Yellow. Starting with either Pikachu or Eevee, the player embarks on the timeless Poké quest of capturing the original 151 Pokémon (plus a few extras from elsewhere in the series) and adventuring through the Kanto region. There are a few new features over the original, including the ability to take a Pokémon out of its ball to play with it and explore alongside it. While we’ve listed Pokémon Scarlet/Violet elsewhere on this list - because they are great games - they are set in an open world and might be a bit harder for young gamers to get into. The Let’s Go games are more linear and a bit simpler to grasp for first-time Pokémon trainers.
