The best indie games you have to experience this year

The very best indie games for PC, Switch, Xbox and PlayStation

Best indie games of the year

by William Austin-Lobley |
Updated on

Once a niche proposition, indie games are now having a field day. The world over, small teams of game developers are throwing out some of the most charming and provocative, experimental and imaginative games ever to have graced a gaming platform or gaming console.

You can find indie video games across all gaming platforms, but there are undoubtedly places where indie games (and their developers) are more at home. The PC has always been a bastion of indie titles, the PS Vita (yup, remember that?) and the Nintendo Switch are recognised as the home console indie systems. More recently, however, Xbox has been making moves to better support indie titles, particularly through the Game Pass subscription service. Eyes are also turning towards the Valve Steam Deck as a way of enjoying PC indies away from the desk.

While there are impressive and cinematic things happening over in the triple-A space with first-person shooters, sci-fi epics and expansive open-world RPGs, the indie world is the place to be for true discovery. Indie games are of a smaller scale, but their souls are huge.

Here are the best indie games available today, for PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch.

Scorn

Inspired by the legacy of renowned artist, H. R. Geiger, Scorn is a glimpse into an utterly alien world, where biology and technology are one.

Players experience the vast, stark, and atmospheric hellscape of Scorn as a humanoid creature - goalless, helpless, alone and afraid, players must press on, complete puzzles, and avoid Scorn's twisted inhabitants.

Scorn is a fresh, unique vision that's a culmination of some incredible development teams unafraid to push the boundaries of gaming as we know it.

Inside, you face a host of terrible creatures in a battle of strategy, win and you may escape, lose and confront your own terrible fate.

And yet, as you journey through, game after game, you'll find that Inscryption is constantly reinventing itself, testing the boundaries of the deck-building genre, and finding new ways to surprise the player.

Plus, even when you fail, Cuphead looks and sounds so good that you won’t mind.

Studio MDHR recently released a huge DLC for Cuphead; cleverly named the Delicious Last Couse, and it's even more challenging than the main game.

More Run n' Gun, more mind-melting bosses, more high-octane, more hip-shaking jazz from Kristoff Madigan, it's a gamer's dream come true, and then some.

The game is rendered in a high-contrast 2.5D style, with the narrative needing to be interpreted through events as they unfold. While on paper Inside can seem like a pretty straightforward platformer, to play it is to be taken on a journey like no other. Don’t look up the plot, just play it and thank us later.

Xbox Game Pass: If you’re a member of the Game Pass service, it makes sense to take advantage of your access to try out indie titles. There’s no risk in exploring some new genres and quirky gameplay - you might even end up finding your next favourite game. You can read all about the best games on Game Pass.

What is an indie game?

Traditionally, an indie game, or independent video game to give the classification its full title, is a video game that has come into being without the backing of a large publisher (like Nintendo, Microsoft, Activision or EA).

The heritage of indie games reaches back into the earliest days of video gaming itself, with so-minded folk modding, hacking and building games as a pastime, sometimes uploading them as shareware. As times changed and PC gaming grew in popularity, so did the hobbyist practice, eventually evolving into what we would recognise today as classic indie game development.

However, in recent years the term has found a slightly looser definition. It can now refer to a development team with a level of autonomy from a larger publisher, and it’s not unheard of for independent developers to receive funding or support from larger companies, such as Sony or Microsoft.

Undoubtedly, this does muddy the indie waters. Independent video games are attractive to many because of their punk-like, DIY attitude - a creative outlet that disregards the bottom line in favour of expression and experimentation. How much of this ethos can be preserved in the indie arena as more big names start injecting cash is a matter of debate, and the long terms effects are yet to be seen.

Whatever happens in the future, there are plenty of indie games to enjoy and cherish. Happy gaming!

The best places to find indie games:

Without question, one contributing factor to the rise of the indie game scene is accessibility. Games can be found, downloaded and played in several places. Here are some of our favourite places to hunt for our next indie fixes:

Itch.io - “...open marketplace for independent digital creators with a focus on independent video games.”

Steam - “...a platform for thousands of creators and publishers to deliver content and establish direct relationships with their customers.”

Humble Bundle - “The best place to buy games & bundles while supporting charity.”

Xbox Game Pass - “Immerse yourself in a library of over 100 high-quality games”

Nintendo eShop - “Get the games you want, when you want them! ... Nintendo eShop is your official digital games store on Nintendo Switch”
