Sometimes, it’s good to go with what’s trending. The Kindle store is very open about what’s performing well and picking up attention from readers all over the country. Even if you don’t end up choosing one of the top performers, even clicking through to books that interest you can lead you down a rabbit hole, at the bottom of which sits your new favourite novel.

It's not even all about fiction. There's a wealth of non-fiction books available for Kindle, including cookbooks for slow cookers, vegans and students, through to those dedicated to helping you relax, either through crafting or mindfulness.

Below, you’ll find the bestsellers on the Kindle store. We’ve broken it down into three sections. The first is the bestsellers - these are the books that readers are purchasing with real-world cash. Second up are the top picks from the curated list of free downloads on Prime Reading, the service which provides Prime members with 10 free ebooks. Lastly, we have listed the top free downloads - these books are free to download and are usually pretty quirky.

So, there’s nothing left to do but peruse the digital bookshelves.

The BBC Radio 2 Book Club and Richard and Judy Book Club Pick

From the blurb: Veronica McCreedy lives in a mansion by the sea. She loves a nice cup of Darjeeling tea whilst watching a good wildlife documentary. And she's never seen without her ruby-red lipstick. Although these days Veronica is rarely seen by anyone because, at 85, her days are spent mostly at home, alone. She can be found either collecting litter from the beach ('people who litter the countryside should be shot'), trying to locate her glasses ('someone must have moved them') or shouting instructions to her assistant, Eileen ('Eileen, door!'). Veronica doesn't have family or friends nearby. Not that she knows about, anyway . . . And she has no idea where she's going to leave her considerable wealth when she dies. But today . . . today Veronica is going to make a decision that will change all of this.

Cuthbert's Way: A DCI Ryan Mystery by LJ Ross
Price: £2.99

From the bestselling author of Holy Island and Imposter

From the blurb: After the dramatic theft of a priceless artefact from Durham Cathedral, the rest of the world believes that DCI Ryan and his team were able to recover and return St. Cuthbert's cross to its rightful home. But Ryan knows the cross he recovered was a fake (far from being over, their problems are only just beginning) Murder and mystery are peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunit set amidst the spectacular Northumbrian landscape.

From the Booker Prize winning author of The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go

From the blurb: The Buried Giant begins as a couple set off across a troubled land of mist and rain in the hope of finding a son they have not seen in years. Sometimes savage, often intensely moving, Kazuo Ishiguro's first novel in a decade is about lost memories, love, revenge and war.

A gripping mystery thriller from a number one bestselling author

From the blurb: On an island off the windswept Irish coast, guests gather for the wedding of the year - the marriage of Jules Keegan and Will Slater. Old friends. Past grudges. Happy families. Hidden jealousies. Thirteen guests. One body. The wedding cake has barely been cut when one of the guests is found dead. And as a storm unleashes its fury on the island, everyone is trapped. All have a secret. All have a motive. One guest won't leave this wedding alive . . .

A modern classic from one of the twentieth century's most influential authors

From the blurb: The townspeople of Oran are in the grip of a deadly plague, which condemns its victims to a swift and horrifying death. Fear, isolation and claustrophobia follow as they are forced into quarantine. Each person responds in their own way to the lethal disease: some resign themselves to fate, some seek blame, and a few, like Dr Rieux, resist the terror. An immediate triumph when it was published in 1947, The Plague is in part an allegory of France's suffering under the Nazi occupation, and a story of bravery and determination against the precariousness of human existence.
