As solid as they are, the best smartphones made by Apple aren't indestructible – but thankfully you can still avoid an expensive accident by using the best iPhone screen protectors on the market. iPhone cases are of course a great way to get all-round protection, but not all of these come with a built-in screen protector. And those that do are often plastic and offer limited protection, as well as looking considerably less shiny than your precious iPhone screen.
But surely, with all of the titanium, aluminium, and toughened glass coming as standard with new iPhones (not to mention many wild drop test claims) you don't need a glass screen protector as well? Think again.

Apple's screen tech is covered in anti-shatter or anti-scratch glass depending on the iPhone model. And that doesn't translate to 'shatterproof' or 'scratchproof'. Our guide includes a range of prices, as well as iPhone models that the screen protectors are compatible with. There's also a guide to help you choose the right one for you, covering the fit and how they're applied. We think the JETech Screen Protector for iPhone 15 is an excellent budget-friendly option. It combines 9H tempered glass durability with ease of installation. How to choose the best iPhone screen protector
Ensure a good match for your iPhone
It may seem like an unnecessary step, but just because an iPhone screen protector says 'for iPhone 14' on the box doesn't mean it's the same shape. But surely they have to be, right? Well, almost. Despite having the dimensions to fit any given iPhone, there are subtle differences. Some may not quite cover the original phone screen all the way to the very edge, and others sometimes have differently shaped and sized cut-outs for home buttons and cameras.
It's always worth double-checking that these features are indeed a great match for your iPhone. In choosing the best iPhone screen protectors we've looked at user reviews to double-check the fit and finish of the protectors listed here.
Choose the toughest glass you can
Most iPhone screen protectors have a rating for the toughness of the glass. These can differ from brand to brand, with some leading with drop tests and so on. Of course, with any form of device protector, it's always best to get one that can withstand the most wear and tear. And don't underestimate the ease with which you can scratch or chip your brand-new iPhone screen. Despite being made from toughened glass in the first place, having something as simple as a house key in your pocket next to the screen can result in damage if you're unlucky.
Buy a multi-pack
There are two reasons why we recommend getting a multi-pack of glass screen protectors. Firstly, even those of us who have fitted these things before know how tricky it can be to get them right. Specs of dust and stubborn air bubbles trapped under the protector can really ruin the look of your iPhone. Having at least two in a pack will allow you to practice the cleaning and application steps for the best results.
Secondly, as good as screen protectors are, they are still made from glass. The whole point of these is that they should break before your iPhone screen does. So, having a spare in your drawer is ideal for those times when you chip, scratch or shatter your old one.
FAQs
Do I need an iPhone screen protector?
This is completely up to you, but as iPhones are such expensive items, we'd highly recommend purchasing one. Many of us prefer iPhones over cheaper alternatives but the cost of replacing a screen on any iPhone is often half the price of the phone itself. All it takes is a small drop, being stored in a bag next to something abrasive, or being slipped into in a pocket when sitting to cause massive damage. We'd also recommend an iPhone case for the best protection all around.
What is the downside of screen protectors?
As mentioned briefly above, they can be a little tricky to apply to your iPhone – particularly those with larger displays, like the iPhone 14 Pro Max we reviewed. They often come with a small kit to clean your screen to remove dust and fingerprints first. And then there are often stickers on the protector that protrude from the edges, allowing you to hold it without touching the glass outer or the adhesive underside. It takes some practice to carefully lower the protector so that it lines up perfectly with the phone and any cut-puts for camera lenses and so on.
And then, once applied, you can still be unlucky and have a spec of dust with an air bubble to contend with. It is possible to lift up the edge of a protector to remove air bubbles at the point of fitting it, though. But this has to be done gently to avoid cracking the protector. Sometimes, inferior protectors can also increase reflections and impact screen clarity, but that's becoming less common with the advent of better glass technology.
Are glass screen protectors really better than plastic?
Undoubtedly. Glass has a tougher finish, is optically clearer and works brilliantly with touchscreens. Plastic can be prone to micro-scratches over time too, leading to a slightly misty look that's impossible to polish out. One of the most common causes of iPhone screen damage is when someone bundles it into a bag with a plug-in iPhone charger. The prongs of a charger plug can do a lot of damage to glass, but plastic protectors can be instantly dented and quickly lead to damaged screens underneath.
How we chose these products
We selected our pick of the best iPhone screen protectors based on reliable and trusted brands, average user reviews, price, and suitability for each use case. We look carefully at the technical specifications of all products before we recommend them to ensure that they will meet buyers' needs without requiring modifications or costly additions to function as intended.
