Tribit FlyBuds 3S1 Wireless Earbuds - waterproof headphones
Price: £49.99

With their FlyBuds, Tribit has somehow managed to tick most of the wireless headphone boxes. Having plenty of accolades for audio quality under its belt, this neat little package can deliver a whole lot more than good sound. But first, let's take a look at the all-important waterproofing.

Yes, these are rated as IPX8 - the same as most devices designed to survive underwater. However, whilst these will still work after being submerged (or even taken into a shower), the Bluetooth implementation is not designed to transmit through water. But this is a minor restriction that's only likely to concern swimmers. The Bluetooth standard here is 5.2, so out of the water, it's reliable with good range.

The rest of us can enjoy convenient and responsive control over our music thanks to the capacitive touch interface built into each earbud. Battery life lasts an impressive eight hours (up to 150 with top-ups from the charging case). The case can also be used, via its USB port, as a portable power bank. To top it off, you can even make calls via your mobile phone thanks to the internal microphone.

Pros

  • Long battery life
  • Built-in microphone
  • Capacitive touch controls
  • Bluetooth 5.2
  • Included ear fins and ear tips for a custom fit
  • The case doubles as a portable power bank

Cons

  • Customer review: "Had them for almost a year now and extremely happy with them, all around great for the low price point. They work well for running/any exercise as well as everyday use. Especially impressive is the battery life, I use them quite regularly and do not need to recharge often. The charging case is hence slightly larger and heavier than others, but is well worth it, and the added ability to use it as a battery pack for other devices is great."

Walmart$39.99View offer

H2O has been around for several years now, specialising in solid, reliable waterproof audio accessories. At first glance, the Audio Surge S+ might seem like just another set of wired headphones - but they're much more than that. Designed to plug into your existing music player attached to your goggle strap, these are the ultimate in simplicity done very, very well.

Where waterproofing is concerned, these are 100% waterproof up to a staggering 3.6m below the surface. The cord is nice and short at 30cm, so you won't get tangled up doing the backstroke. Longer cord versions are available though, if you need a little more wriggle room. An issue that can plague many swimmers is achieving a watertight but comfortable fit in the ear. These come with a wide range of earplugs, so you should be able to fine-tune the fit and enjoy your music without them coming loose in the water.

Pros

  • 100% waterproof up to 3.6m

Best bone conduction headphones for swimming

SHOKZ OpenSwim waterproof headphones

Rrp: £149.95

Price: £104.95

Bone conduction is a tried and tested technology that many swimmers prefer over earbuds for a few good reasons: Some can be prone to ear problems when swimming due to their ear canal being blocked. Others may find that they never get a good fit with earbuds and prefer the sure fit that a headband can offer. The third benefit of bone conduction is clean sound quality, as no sound waves are getting muddied by the water. Read more at the bottom of the page if you're interested in how this tech works.

Compatible with swim caps and goggles and recommended by England Athletics, the SHOKZ OpenSwim headphones can be submerged up to two metres for up to two hours. They're lightweight, and the titanium wraparound headband will stop these aquatic beauties from slipping around. There's no Bluetooth to worry about here either, as there's an in-built MP3 player. Just upload your music over the USB cable, and you're good to go.

  • Customer review: "These things are amazing! The sound underwater is fantastic (which makes me want to swim more), but actually you can wear them anywhere, not just for swimming. So if you bought them for use at a health spa, like me, they are also good for use in the sauna and steam room, or during a massage, or anything really. Aside from this, they can also be worn just for going for a walk or doing housework or whatever."

This is another SHOKX product that's endorsed by England Athletics, and for good reason. Again a bone conduction set these are especially secure when worn during running and other active fitness routines. They're Bluetooth, so no wires to worry about, and they are lightweight. One huge benefit here is the dual noise-cancelling microphones, letting you make those calls (if you have the breath left to speak and run at the same time, that is).

Tactile buttons will give you quick and accurate control over your music, and battery life is a decent eight hours. Unlike the SHOKX OpenSwim model above, these don't have a built-in MP3 player - but Bluetooth instead. Although, in waterproofing terms, these hold an IPX8 rating, the Bluetooth signal isn't designed to work in the water. If you need them too, go for the SHOKX OpenSwim headphones instead.

Pros

  • Secure fit for active sports
  • Open ears for comfort
  • Very lightweight
  • Dual noise cancelling microphone
  • Fast charging

  • Bluetooth is not compatible with swimming
  • No built-in mp3 player

  • Customer review: "Seems good quality, nice sound and it is open rather than in-ear, so you can cycle or run and still hear important sounds (like angry driver horns!). Very lightweight and stays on the ear nicely. Only thing I’d say is max volume isn’t very high so I’d recommend deactivating any volume limiters on whatever device you’re connecting it to."

Best waterproof headphones for working-out

Sony NW-WS623 Waterproof Walkman - waterproof headphones
Price: £139.99

The Sony Walkman has had quite a few comebacks in its day, but here's one that's actually built into the headphones - with not a single cassette tape in sight. As a premium brand when it comes to all things audio, Sony has managed to squeeze a stunning 12 hours of playback time into these sophisticated-looking earbuds.

These are IPX8 rated and will even resist saltwater. They're submersible at two metres for 30 minutes - not quite the best on this list but reasonable for such a strong all-rounder. The 623s boast 4GB of storage for your files and also benefit from Bluetooth and a microphone for wireless music and calls on the go.

Fit-wise, a rigid hook and flexible band are designed to keep them in place no matter what. A brilliant added feature of these is its Ambient Sound modes. At the click of a button, you can choose how much of the outside world you want to let into your lobes. A huge plus for jogging in urban areas.

Pros

  • Built-in MP3 player
  • Excellent battery time
  • Ambient sound mode
  • Built-in microphone
  • Quick charge feature

Cons

  • Limited comfort options for some
  • The sound quality is good but not high-end

  • Customer review: "Just perfect for swimming. Sound volume underwater is not an issue at all, and they are really comfortable - I use a slightly larger swimming cap to secure them fully around the ear and it works really well. In the box you have a set of waterproof ear tips, make SURE you replace the ones that come already on the headset (not waterproof) with one of them before going in the water."

TOZO T10 Bluetooth 5.3 Earbuds - waterproof headphones

Newegg$26.99View offer
Walmart$35.99View offer

In the world of waterproof headphones, it's rare to find a pair that does quite as much as these do for such a low price. And somehow, TOZO has delivered on their promise here, and the popularity of these is a testament to how well-built these are.

With four pairs of ear tips included to ensure a snug and comfortable fit, the T10 earbuds have a reputation for deep bass and a rich soundscape. Bluetooth is also reliable, utilising the 5.3 standard. You can control your media through a responsive capacitive touch interface on each bud.

As for waterproofing, they have a hydrophobic coating that will repel water. Much like the other earbuds on our list, they are IPX8 rated, but whilst they'll survive a spin in the washing machine (or drop in a shallow pool for 30 minutes), they're not able to function underwater. But that shouldn't put you off unless you're a swimmer (or prone to accidentally slipping into the deep end on holiday). With 10 hours of playback time, high-tech features, and sophisticated looks, you'd never guess that these could be so affordable.

Pros

  • Excellent sound
  • Comfortable
  • Hydrophobic nano-coating
  • Reliable Bluetooth
  • Easy-to-use interface

Cons

  • Submerged time and depth are lower than most
  • Charge time a little longer than others
  • Range of eartips sizes may be limited for some
  • Comfort:
    4.0
  • Design:
    5.0
  • Waterproofing:
    3.5
  • Features:

  • Value for money:

Type:Earbud
Battery Life:10 hours (45 with charge case)
Weight:2g per earbud
IPX Rating:IPX8 (up to 1m for 30 minutes)
Controls:Capacitive touch
Wireless:Bluetooth 5.3
Cord length:n/a
Built-in media player:No
Storage (GB):n/a
  • Customer review: "A surprisingly good pair of earbuds. The sound is pretty much perfect with a decent bass level without muffling the mids and highs. Quite a bit of noise cancelling purely due to the design of the buds rather than anything active, and I actually replaced mine with foam ones instead. Controlling them is simple enough with one tap to play/pause, two taps for next track, and hold it down for volume up or down."

Best waterproof headphones of 2023: Buyer's guide

IPX ratings explained

The terms waterproof and water-resistant mean two very different things. Waterproof means it can be completely submerged. Water resistance will only repel water under certain conditions. Even then, there are various grades within each rating.

IPX is an international standard that covers waterproofing, water resistance and even dust. Water resistance is rated between IPX3 and IPX7. You'll commonly find this on headphones that can withstand sweat, splashes of rain, and a very short time submerged, but nothing much more than that. IPX7, IPX8 and above have a waterproof rating. This means that headphones with that rating will be able to handle submersion, but depths and times will vary.

Fit and comfort

In-ear headphones or earbuds often come with eartips - silicone fittings that will create a good seal with the wearer's ears, often important for swimmers. A better seal means better sound. Some are also kept in place with over-ear straps.

Bone-conduction headphones fit snugly against the head behind the ear, so this will feel very different from regular in-ear headphones. Normally a strap that goes behind the head and neck will keep these in place.

Whatever fit you choose, you should be confident that they will stay in place as you exercise, particularly for swimmers.

Control interface

How you interact with your music player will very much depend on the activity you're doing. Generally, a swimmer or anyone in contact with a lot of water won't want headphones with capacitive-touch controls. They can be harder to locate in the water. The water itself can trigger the controls of less capable models. Consider whether you'd prefer tactile buttons on the headphones themselves so that you can reach them more easily.

Wireless or wired

Most commonly, wireless headphones will be connected to your device via Bluetooth. But keep in mind that they'll all have different battery life on one full charge. Plus, not all wireless headphones perform well underwater. So, if you're a swimmer, wired or bone-conductive headphones will be the better choice.

Best waterproof headphones of 2023: FAQs

Can I wear waterproof headphones in the pool?

Yes - but you should always check the actual IPX rating of your headphones first. Not all 'waterproof' headphones can withstand being submerged, And those that do often have different depth ratings as well as variable maximum submersion times.

Are Apple headphones waterproof?

This will vary. For example, Apple EarPods and AirPods have different ratings for water resistance. Currently, Apple headphones don't have a waterproof rating. Check your headphone model and consult your manual (or visit the Apple website) before you get close to any water.

Are Bose headphones waterproof?

Not all Bose headphones have waterproofing. The current range of Bose headphones does feature some that have IPX4 water resistance. This means they can withstand the odd splash of rain (and sweat from jogging or gym routines) but not submersion. If you're a fan of premium brands, some Sony headphones also offer water resistance.

How do waterproof headphones work

Two main technologies allow these to work. First, various seals and materials are used on the case to keep moisture away from any delicate circuitry or sound drivers. There are even special hydrophobic coatings that repel water. Charging, in the case of wireless headphones, is via a waterproof charging port or through a wireless charge pad.

Secondly, the audio is handled very cleverly. In the case of submerged in-ear headphones, they work in much the same way underwater as they would above. The second method is bone-conduction headphones. These will leave your ear canals open to the elements - if that's what you prefer while doing your activities. We'll look at how they work next.

How do bone-conduction waterproof headphones work?

Unsurprisingly, they work by maintaining a close fit with the bone at the back of your ears. However, the sound produced by these headphones is not like the tiny speaker cones you'll find in normal sets. This time, instead of producing sound waves, these produce a contact-based vibration that travels through your bone. The inner ear registers this as sound. The trick here is that the headphones process the music or podcast. They tune the music to sound normal, even after it's travelled through bone to reach your inner ear.
