When it comes to fragrances, it’s often said that citrus notes work best in the summer and woody ones suit the colder months - so where does that leave us in the autumn?
These kind of rules seem too restrictive anyway, but below are a range of fragrances at various price-points that have the versatility to perform well in the transitional months, where it could be warm in the days and cooler in the evenings.
There are also a few more ‘evening’ scents suited to going out to social events (in small groups, of course).
The Best Men's Fragrances For Autumn 2020
Black’s Club Leather - Shay & Blue
Blacks Club is a member's club in London's Soho and this fragrance from Shay & Blue is their homage to it. The opening is leather (of course) - reminiscent of the leather chairs in the club - heart notes head straight over to the bar and get boozy with cognac. The dry down reveals mahogany wood, a roaring fire and then balances this out with creamy beeswax. It's a sophisticated scent - literary, convivial and refined.
71/72 – Floris
71/72 is a partnership between Jermyn Street neighbours Floris the perfumer and shirtmaker Turnbull & Asser, who reside at 71/72 Jermyn St (hence the name.) The fragrance opens up with juniper and bright citrus notes of mandarin and bergamot. This resonates with heady florals of jasmine and lavender alongside earthy accords of orris and oud. It's a fresh, woody and aromatic fragrance, which would suit a crisp white shirt and formal wear - but would work equally well at a weekend party. Very classy.
Nordic Cedar - Maya Njie
Maya Njie is an independent British perfumer making waves with her bold and distinctive fragrances. Nordic Cedar is the perfect example of this. The cedar wood hero-note is brought to life by cardamom and patchouli and given depth by amber and musk. Perfect for the crisp autumn days when there's change in the air. Warming, comforting and a little bit spicy.
& Horace – Horace
This is the debut fragrance from cool French grooming brand Horace. The first spritz immediately offers up bergamot and spicy white pepper. The heart notes are iris root and cedar wood, drying down with sandal wood , tobacco and an earthy, raw musk accord. It's very easy to wear - at once smoky, spicy and vibrant. It also comes with stickers so you can personalise the bottle with your own name (should you wish).
Eau d’Orange Verte - Hermes
A crisp citrus fragrance from Hermes which pays homage to the sweet, sunny and succulent orange. The fresh opening notes are then joined by basil, patchouli and papaya. The dry down turns into a base of amber, oak moss and patchouli.
Noir Exquis - L’artisan Parfumeur
The inspiration for the scent is pattiserie and it is a gourmand's delight. Chestnuts, orange and maple syrup, with a double shot of espresso - but it's not over-sweet. The nuttiness really comes to the fore. Delicious.
Endymion - Penhaligon’s
Penhaligon's are a British institution and have had a presence on Jermyn Street in London for over 150 years. They now have shops nationwide offering spaces where fine fragrance is showcased and celebrated. Endymion is a spicy little number and more suited to the cooler days. A mandarin opening, leading into sage and lavender. The base notes are black pepper, leather, incense and cardamom.
Raw Instinct - Crabtree & Evelyn
Crabtree & Evelyn are enjoying something of a renaissance at the moment as an online-only business - and this debut fragrance from the new collection is indicative of the quality of the brand. Raw Instinct has a fine balance between fresh, woody and spicy - with some unusual notes, so it creates something quite unique. There's pomelo in the opening for that zesty fresh burst, then kumquat adding a sweeter accord. The heart of the fragrance is a tart apple blossom and then eucalyptus bringing an earthy green note. The drydown settles into a rich woody, smoky aroma of vetiver, guaiac and papyrus. Worth noting the gorgeous green flacon too.
Thé Noir 29 - Le Labo
This is such a distinctive and special scent, perfect for the cooler days and darker evenings. There's the lightness of bergamot and fig contrasting with the intensity of cedar wood, vetiver and musk. All of this serving the hero-note of black tea, that envelops the scent with a smoky, tobacco accord. It's incredible - whatever the weather….
Sauvage - Dior
This is one of the best-selling male fragrances for a very good reason. Juicy fresh top notes of bergamot and a woody dry down thanks to vetiver and ambroxan. Sauvage is inspired by the great outdoors - widescreen skies and desert plains. It's basically Clint Eastwood in fragrance form.
Top tips:
Once you’ve dried off after taking a bath or shower this is a good time to spay your fragrance. The moisture in your skin will help lock in the scent and will also mean it doesn’t mark or stain your clothes.
Don’t be tempted to spray in front of you and walk into it, this is a waste of good fragrance. Spray approximately 10cm away from the skin so that you get an even distribution. The best places to spritz are the pulse points e.g. neck, wrists, inner elbow and back of the knees.
