Buying guide: The best gym towels

Different towel materials explained

There are a wide variety of gym towels available, and a few different materials, including cotton and microfibre. There are pros and cons whichever material you're considering. Here's a few things to think about with each.

Microfibre

Microfibre towels are usually made from nylon or polyester. This makes them both extremely lightweight, and highly absorbent. Microfibre towels can often absorb several times their own weight in water – perfect if you're doing a workout where you're going to sweat a lot. Microfibre is also naturally hypoallergenic, so if you have any allergies or particularly sensitive skin, this might be helpful. These towels feel extremely soft as well.

There are some downsides, though. Microfibre towels are generally more delicate than cotton towels, so need more careful washing and drying. It's often recommended to hand wash or cool wash these towels, or to limit how much detergent is used, or to avoid putting them in a tumble dryer, for example.

They are also less environmentally friendly because they are made from synthetic fibres. These fibres don't degrade as quickly as cotton. But because the towels themselves are more delicate, the likelihood is you'll be replacing a microfibre towel more often than a cotton towel.

Cotton

Cotton towels benefit from being slightly cheaper (in general) and more durable than microfibre towels. They are also easy to wash and dry, and can withstand a wash cycle, or time in the tumble dryer, far more than a microfibre towel can. Cotton is also a natural fibre, and has a slightly smaller environmental impact than the synthetic materials used in microfibre. Cotton still requires plenty of water to grow, and is often treated with pesticides, however.

Compared to a microfibre towel, a cotton towel is bulkier and will therefore take up more room in your bag. It will also typically take longer to dry after use.

What's the best gym towel?

Ultimately, the best gym towel for you will depend on a few factors – price, material, and size, for example, are all likely to play a part in your choice. Our top choice – the Eono Microfibre Towel – offers a variety of sizes and colours, and the microfibre material means it's highly absorbent, but also dries quickly. These are incredibly useful features for any gym towel. If you prefer natural materials, then the Adidas Towel is 100 per cent cotton.

What should I do with a gym towel?

This is a bit of a tricky question because what you do with your gym towel is completely up to you… Here are some ways we think you should use your gym towels:

• To help you dry off after doing cardio

• Use to cover a bench while you use weights

• Wipe away sweat when working out to avoid drips

• Extra support while practising yoga

• For jumping in the shower after working out

What size should a gym towel be?

There is no right answer when it comes to the best-size gym towel. Whether you’re looking for a towel to mop your brow with or something to throw around you, then there are lots of choices out there. We’d recommend choosing the size depending on what you want to use your towel for.

Struggling with joint pain? Skip the bulky weights and build strength with the best resistance bands for any level of experience.

When to wash a gym towel?

According to The Guardian, you should wash yours after every use along with your gym kit. Nobody wants a sweaty towel full of bacteria, so make sure you wash it to get rid of all those germs.
