It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know the difference a nice fresh coat of paint can make to a family home. Whether It’s your messy kids, your pets or simply the need for a change of scenery, now is the perfect time to give your WFH interior a quick and easy paint-over. From Dulux to more niche brands such as Fenwick & Tilbrook, we've shortlisted the best paints for every room – kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom – of the house.

Completely hassle free, we will share everything from paint inspiration and how to pick the perfect paint to preparation and how to paint walls with the necessary paint essentials. You would be surprised how straightforward the process will be once you break down the different rooms, what you’re working with and your chosen colour palette. Some of these brands even guide you through every step of the way.

How to choose wall paint?

As there is quite the range of paints out there to choose from, it is important to understand your paint options. All paints have pigments and a water-based or oil binder. The ratio of pigment to this binder tells you how much paint gloss there will be. And, thanks to technology advancements and new formulas, it is no longer the case that the glossier the finish, the more resilient your paint will be.

You’ve got matte paints and glossy paints, with a whole big (dull to shiny) range in-between. This means you can either go for a matte, silk, satin, semi-gloss, or high gloss paint. Therefore, knowing what kind of furniture you plan to keep, or upgrade, is something to consider. Also, whether you want to go for a brighter or potentially more subtle tone for either a feature wall in your bedroom or living room. Our rule is always less is more. Determine what will be your statement piece (the walls or your furniture) and try not to over-compensate. Use natural light to create shadows and highlights and complement it with a neutral paint colour palette. Wooden furniture, prints, and finer product details then make spaces come to life.

How to paint newly plastered walls

With newly plastered walls being one of the most common surfaces to paint, simply use a primer or undercoat as a sealer (and ensure it is completely dry) before applying your chosen paint. Otherwise, you may notice that your paint gets soaked into the plaster and you’ll find yourself doing unnecessary extra coats to get the same coverage.

Can you use wall paint on wood?

Like any surface, there is always a recommended paint type that should be applied. Wood in this case requires a specially formulated wood paint, for example a chalk paint, acrylic paint, milk paint, latex paint, or oil paint, to ensure you get the best finish. Also make sure the wood surface is fully sanded before application and I would recommend suing an undercoat. Don’t worry about using a primer as wood surfaces tend to already have a base coat.
