If you are planning on heading out on English or Welsh rivers, you’ll want to make sure that you are covered to do so. There are 4,500km of waterways in the UK which require you to have a waterways licence, aka river licence. After spending your time picking the best kayak for you, it’s sensible to check that you are doing the right thing to ensure you have the nicest paddling time possible.
If a river is managed by the Canal & River Trust, Environment Agency or similar agencies, or is the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads, you’ll need to buy a licence to use the waterway (via GoPaddling). The license is a payment that helps the agencies manage the waterways, clean them up and keep them safe for people and the environment.
If you are found to be using a licence-required waterway, you will be fined.
How much does a licence cost?
